SPRMRKT
Raw/Uncooked is the first exhibition by young and upcoming artist, Sanyaa Mehrotra, where she explores the themes of identity and womanhood in the context of a modern indian female student living in Singapore.
“Reflections” has Sanyaa’s name handwritten repeatedly onto scrolls of paper transforming her name and handwriting into a stylistic flowing form and composition, leaving the viewer to question what identity really means.
“Lahu Ka Lagaan” which literally means “tax on blood” in hindi was her response to the recent implementation of GST at varying rates for different consumers goods in India, and where sanitary pads was one for contention as many Indian girls couldn’t afford the necessity even before tax. The series explores how taxing sanitary pads can be hiding or disguising this natural condition because it is considered shameful when it shouldn’t be.
The artist has a desire to educate girls in India that menstruation is not something to be ashamed of, and SPRMRKT hopes to spread this empowering message of identity and womanhood by giving out complimentary sanitary pads in the lead up to her opening reception.
What was your first exhibition at SPRMRKT like?
A rollercoaster! From being super excited to self-depreciating and nervous and then enthusiastic again, I went through it all. I’m happy with how it turned out to be. Also, really thankful to my classmates who introduced me to SPRMRKT and made it happen.
Was there anything you would have done differently?
