Mao Shan Wang – Singapore’s Favourite Durian

What better way to celebrate Singapore’s birthday month than with a cake created with the very special fruit that is Durian. In fact, there’s one specific type of durian that stands above the rest, one specific type that Singaporeans obsesses over: the Mao Shan Wang.

About Mao Shan Wang

Also known as Musang King or its very whimsical translation, Cat Mountain King (from the mandarin 猫山王), the Mao Shan Wang variety of Durian has reigned supreme in Singapore for the past decade.

This variety is known for its complex and bittersweet flavours, making it more compelling than its closest competitor, the D24, with its simpler, generally sweet, and all-around less overwhelming taste. As an added plus, you also get more bang for your buck, with the Mao Shan Wang’s smaller seed-to-durian ratio. More durian flesh = better times to be had by all (who enjoy durian).

Mao Shan Wang differentiates itself by being the quintessential durian. Its strong aroma and flavours set it apart from its milder cousins and has really captured the tastebuds of durian fans in Singapore. Its critics often say that you’ve got to like durian to appreciate.

Here’s the thing, even the mildest durians are incredibly polarising. And so reads the Mao Shan Wang slogan – go big or go home. Rich, creamy, and incredibly decadent, it’s not called a King for nothing.
