Tokyo Cinderella Dolls
[ 08.01 – 08.03 / 2015 ]
SPRMRKT
Japanese photographer Karin Shikata makes her Southeast Asian debut in this exhibition of 15 whimsical images that tell the story of two dolls who wished to be real girls. Their fantasy comes to life in the streets of Tokyo’s Shibuya, Omotesando, Ginza and Asakusa.
Just like Cinderella who had until midnight to attend the Prince’s ball, the dolls – whose momentary quickening would soon end – explore the city, experiencing the everyday lives of Japanese youths, eating street food, taking selfies and riding the train, until night falls and dollhood beckons.
On Wednesday 7th January 2015, the dolls traveled with Karin to Singapore in anticipation of another brief moment of life. The original dolls themselves- Takarazuka Revue actresses Mirei Uchida and Yu Ranma – were reanimated for the opening reception of the exhibition at SPRMRKT and gave a full theatrical performance, engaging both guests and staff!
