Red Gems consists of 2 oil paintings: Red Ruby & Red Gems, depicting seeds of the pomegranate and strawberries respectively. Both have connotations to semi-precious stones as the artist likens these fruit to “jewels of nature”, while encouraging the viewer to take a closer look. The paintings are in an arresting red, at once brightening up the environment but also encouraging us to sink deeper into the discoveries of life.
Artist statement: The idea of a two-dimensional rendering could transcend the restriction of its flat dimension; fool the eyes into believing as it mimics a three-dimensional physical attribute to the point where it awakens one sense and emotions always enchant me. I believe good artwork is able to transcend its deceptive appearance to evoke senses, thus affects one’s body to the point where it ends any aesthetic contemplation. This is what I try to achieve in this still life series, to encourage the viewers to take time to look and savour the work in itself. There is no better place than Here/Now at SPRMRKT Daily to inspire this mindfulness and to experience.
What have you been up to since your last show with us at SPRMRKT on 2 McCallum Street?
I have been painting but sometimes life gets in the way, so it has been rather an uphill battle to produce more works.
How have you developed as an artist?
I believe I still have a long journey to go, it is a life journey to be an artist, so I am still learning everyday.
